The winning streak is still alive . . . but just barely.
Whitby Purple did just enough to keep the winning streak going against basement-dwelling Whitby Royal Blue last night at Carnwith West field. As has been the case in every game so far this season, Purple did everything but lay a red carpet in front of their own goal and were punished early as Royal Blue went ahead on about the 15th minute of play.
As has also been a habit, most of the offensive action was by Royal Blue deep in Purple's end of the field. Purple was very lucky to get the equalizing goal just before the referee blew the whistle for half-time. James S. managed to get a glancing shot just inside the post at about the 44th minute in a confusing scrum in the Royal Blue 6-yard box.
The second half started off well for Purple, with Adriano C. getting his first goal of the season as Purple turned the tables and spent much of the second half constantly attacking Royal Blue's goal area. Accuracy, both in passing and in finishing, were sadly lacking or Purple would have converted many more opportunities during the second half.
Goalkeeping was an issue for Purple, as Chris A. had injured his hand and Nick M. was late getting to the field, just barely getting his equipment on before the whistle to start the first half. Emergency keeper Jordan C. was only challenged a few times and kept a clean sheet for the second half.
With a 4-0 record, Purple is now in undisputed possession of first place in the Under-18 Boys division. But they were so lucky to come away with a win in this game.
